Loose Leash Walkin Part 2

Welcome back. This week we will be discussing loose leash walking with sit and socialization. Please not that I'm not an expert. Please consult with a dog training expert.
We will also update you about the new products added to Pierre's Dog Emporium.

As we discussed last week, loose leash walking can take months to master and it takes a lot of hard work.
Now that your dog is calmer while walking on a leash, we want to add sit to the training.

The ultimate goal is to have your dog sit when you stop walking. While walking your dog stop and say "sit". Now wait for your dog to sit. Once he/she does, say "lets go" and continue with your walk.
You should practice this on every walk.

For me a good place to ask your dog to sit is just before you approach the street corner.

Socialization
I recommend that you take the time introducing your puppy to other puppies. Try to ensure that these are pleasant experiences.
Always ask another dog owner if it's ok to approach their dog. If it's ok, approach the other dog and let your dog spend a few seconds.

As time goes by try to increase the time spent scoializing your dog with other dogs.
At some point you may want to find your dog a playtime friend to spend some time with every once in a while.

Next week we will be discussing the leave it comand and the drop it command.

Loose Leash Walkin Part 1

Welcome back to Pierre's Dog Emporium Tips & Ideas. This week we will be discussing loose leash walking. This is the first part in a two part series.
Please note: I'm not a dog expert. Consult a dog trainer for an expert opinion on dog training.

Loose Leash walkning is one of the most difficult things to teach your dog. It's been over 2 months and our dog Pierre is now starting to show signs of understanding loose leash walking.
It takes practice but it's worth it. You'll enjoy your walks once your dog learns how to loose leash walk. the tips taught in here were learned while attending a dog training class at PETsMART.

First you will teach your dog to stand without pulling on the leash.
a)Have some treats ready.
b)Attach the leash to your dog's collar.
c)Let the leash drop beside your body.
d)If your dog remains calm, reward him/her for paying attention.
If your dog starts pulling on the leash and extends to the end of the leash, don't move. Try to have your dog return to your side. When your dog returns, reward him/her.

Now you're ready to take your first step.
a)Say your dog's name and "lets Go". then take a step.
b)If your dog darts and moves to the end of the leash, stop and wait for your dog to return to you.
c)start the process over again.
d) your dog should learn that if they don't pull on the leash, their walk will continue..

You should practice this every time you go for a walk.
Next week we will teach you part 2, loose leash walking with sit.

Welcome to Pierre's Pet Emporium Blog

Hi,
Pierre's Dog Emporium is finally up and running on this new blog. We've decided that Pierre's Dog Emporium required it's own blog, so that we could dedicate more space and time to the emporium.

This week's update will be short and will focus on discouraging your dog from unwanted behavior. I will return on Wednesday to discuss loose leash walking. I will also discuss some products and promotions being featured at the dog emporium.

All puppies do things that we get annoyed at. It could be hyper behavior, nipping or jumping up on us when we're sitting. What ever the behavior is, We all hope that our beloved dog will stop what they're doing..

I don't believe in military or corporate behavior(physically reprimanding your dog).
I believe in positive reinforcement. You should be consistent and you can use a deep/serious voice with your dog.

When your dog exhibits a behavior that you don't like, say "ah ah". If your dog still doesn't listen, repeat the command. Many times your dog will still ignore you.
Try turning your back on your dog and ignore them. If your dog follows you, repeat this behavior. Your dog should get the message and retreat. Once your dog has stopped their behavior, you can go back to what you were doing.

This training takes time and effort on your part. While it may seem that this training is futile, stick with it. It will work.

If your dog is nipping on you, you can try something else. If your dog doesn't listen after you say "ah ah", try saying "ouch" in shrieking voice. This should startle your little friend.

These are a few tips to discourage unwanted behavior. The key is to find something that will take your dog's mind off the behavior that they are doing.

Please note: I'm not a dog training expert. Sign up for a training class to receive expert advice on how best to train your dog.
